5. Types of Flowers, Colors & Their Meanings

Roses — The World's Most Popular Flower

Roses are the #1 most searched flower worldwide, with over 135,000 monthly global searches for "rose bouquet" alone. At FlowersAthens.gr we offer red, white, pink, peach, yellow, garden, and spray roses.

  • Red roses — passionate love, romance, deep respect. The universal language of love.
  • White roses — purity, new beginnings, remembrance. Popular for weddings and sympathy.
  • Pink roses — admiration, gratitude, gentle affection. Ideal for mothers and friends.
  • Peach roses — sincerity, modesty, appreciation. Elegant and understated.
  • Yellow roses — friendship, joy, warmth. A cheerful choice for birthdays.
  • Orange roses — enthusiasm, passion, energy. Bold and striking.

Peonies — Greece's Favourite Luxury Flower

Peonies symbolise prosperity, romance, good fortune and bashfulness. They are seasonal in Greece (spring, roughly April–June) and highly sought after. Their full, lush blooms make them ideal for luxury bouquets, wedding arrangements, and premium gift boxes. Book early when peonies are in season.

Lilies — Elegance and Purity

  • White lilies — purity, virtue, renewal. Used widely in religious ceremonies and sympathy arrangements in Greece.
  • Oriental lilies — richly scented, bold colours. Excellent for statement bouquets.
  • Calla lilies — sophisticated, minimalist. Very popular for weddings in Athens.
  • Asiatic lilies — vibrant colours, unscented. Long-lasting.

Hydrangeas — Volume and Drama

Hydrangeas symbolise heartfelt emotion, gratitude, and abundance. Available in blue, white, pink, green and purple. Their large flower heads create visual impact in arrangements. Popular for weddings, baptisms, and luxury bouquets.

Tulips — Spring Elegance

Tulips are seasonal (February–April in Greece). They symbolise perfect love and are among the most elegant spring flowers. Available in virtually every colour. Red tulips declare love; purple tulips convey royalty; white tulips offer forgiveness.

Orchids — Luxury & Longevity

Orchids symbolise beauty, strength, and luxury. Phalaenopsis orchids are our most popular choice for corporate gifting — they last 6–8 weeks with minimal care. Cymbidium orchids create dramatic cut-flower arrangements. Both are available at FlowersAthens.gr.

Sunflowers — Joy & Positivity

Sunflowers represent adoration, loyalty, and longevity. They are irresistibly cheerful and make bold birthday and get-well arrangements. Available year-round in Athens, Greece.

Chrysanthemums — The Greek Sympathy Flower

In Greece, white chrysanthemums are strongly associated with funerals and sympathy. They should be avoided for celebratory occasions in Greece, unlike in some other cultures where they are general-purpose flowers. For sympathy and funeral orders, white chrysanthemums are entirely appropriate.

Ranunculus — The Florist's Secret Weapon

Ranunculus are layered, rose-like blooms available in almost every colour. They are a florist's favourite for their extraordinary visual impact and long vase life. Seasonal in Greece (winter-spring). Increasingly popular in luxury wedding and event floristry.

What flowers should I NOT send in Greece?

Avoid chrysanthemums for celebrations — they are associated with funerals in Greece. There are no other major taboos. Yellow flowers, which carry negative associations in some Eastern European cultures, are entirely acceptable in Greece.

8. Flower Care Guide — How to Make Your Flowers Last

General cut flower care

  1. Trim stems at a 45-degree angle with a sharp knife or scissors — never tear
  2. Remove any leaves below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth
  3. Use a clean vase with fresh, cool water
  4. Change the water every 2 days
  5. Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and fruit (ethylene gas from fruit accelerates wilting)
  6. Use flower food sachet if provided

How long do roses last?

With proper care, roses last 7–10 days. Keep them cool, change water every 2 days, trim stems every 2–3 days, and avoid ethylene sources (fruit, cigarette smoke). Premium roses from quality florists like FlowersAthens.gr last longer than supermarket roses due to superior freshness at the point of cutting.

How long do peonies last?

Peonies last 5–7 days when cut. Buy or receive them in bud form — they will open beautifully over 2–3 days. Keep cool and change water regularly. To slow opening, keep in a cool room or even the refrigerator overnight.

How long do orchids last?

Cut orchid stems last 2–4 weeks in a vase — one of the longest-lasting cut flowers. Potted phalaenopsis orchids can bloom for 8–12 weeks. Keep in indirect light, water sparingly (once per week), and avoid cold drafts.

How long do lilies last?

Lilies last 10–14 days — among the longest of all cut flowers. They continue to open from bud, giving you a changing display. Remove anthers (the pollen-bearing parts) to prevent staining and extend vase life.

Fresh flowers vs. supermarket flowers — what's the difference?

Professional florists like FlowersAthens.gr source flowers from premium European wholesalers and cut them to order, ensuring maximum freshness. Supermarket flowers are often several days old before purchase. The result is a significant difference in vase life, bloom quality, and overall appearance. A professional arrangement from FlowersAthens.gr will consistently outlast a supermarket bouquet by 3–5 days.

9. Greek Floral Culture & Traditions

Flowers in Ancient Greece

The relationship between Greeks and flowers goes back thousands of years. In ancient Greece, flower wreaths (στεφάνια) honoured gods, athletes, poets, and heroes. The olive wreath was the ultimate prize at the Olympic Games. Laurel wreaths crowned victorious generals and poets. Flowers were offered to the gods at temples and used in all major religious and civic ceremonies.

Flowers in the Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Church uses flowers extensively throughout the liturgical year. The most elaborate floral display is the Epitaphios on Good Friday — a bier decorated with thousands of flowers, traditionally carried through the streets in candlelight procession. Churches are also adorned for major feast days, weddings, and baptisms.

The Meaning of Flowers in Greek Culture Today

Modern Athenians give flowers for every significant occasion — name days, birthdays, hospital visits, business openings, and condolences. Unlike some Northern European cultures where flowers are primarily a romantic gesture, in Greece flowers are given freely between friends, family members, and colleagues. A Greek host arriving at a dinner party without flowers for the hostess would be considered impolite.

Do Greeks celebrate Valentine's Day?

Yes — Valentine's Day (February 14) is widely celebrated in Athens and across Greece, particularly among younger generations. However, Greeks also celebrate name days and the feast of Saints Constantine and Helen (May 21) as occasions for romantic flower gifting.

Greek Easter vs. Western Easter

Greek Orthodox Easter falls on a different date from Western (Catholic/Protestant) Easter, calculated using the Julian calendar. It typically falls 1–5 weeks later than Western Easter. Always check the Greek Orthodox Easter date when planning Easter flower orders for Athens, Greece.
